Sure I found some decent socket sets and separate wrench sets; what I did not find was a mid size, fair priced set with both wrenches and sockets. My last stop was at a local Sears store and after browsing the standard Craftsman sets that were in stock, it quickly became evident that I was not going to be able to afford what I set out to do.Now it has been a little while since I have been to Seers, and the last I remember was the Companion line of tools that seemed kind of cheap to me at the time. It looks like Sears dropped the Companion line and came up with the Evolv line of hand and power tools.I will say that the packaging and overall presentation of the Evolv line seems to have a good vibe to it. With simplistic packaging and a curious color combination of grey and green think the Ryobi Lithium-ion line of tools.I figure I would give them a try. The particular set I picked up was a Piece SAE and Metric Tool Set that had both shallow and deep sockets along with some of the most common sizes of wrenches. The tool set came in a blow molded clamshell-style hard case with pockets and spaces for each item. There was no extra space to expand should you need to add more tools, though. The set includes both metric and SAE inches sockets and wrenches. All the sockets are polished chrome with deeply stamped Craftsman Evolv logos and sizes on each of them. When you get these all greasy, you will still be able to tell what size they are. The ratchet has an easy grip handle and with just a flick of a switch, you can go from forward to reverse action. The wrenches in the set are also fully polished chrome and feature an open end and closed 12 point box end on each. The rest of the tools in the set are some specialty screwdriver bits like Torx, hex, Philips and straight bits. Pretty much almost anything you would need to get into your kids toys when it needs some new batteries.Of course for these kinds of jobs this set preforms great. We would not expect you to be able to rebuild a car engine with a set like this but for the basic do-it-yourself type, this set is a good start. The overall quality of the tools appear pretty good. There are not sharp edges and the inside of the sockets are clean and smooth. Just in case there is a problem with these tools, they come with a lifetime warranty, but for all your die-hard Craftsman Hand tool folks out there, it is not the same warranty as the standard Craftsman Tool Warranty. With the Evolv tools, they will replace any broken piece as long as you come back to the store with the full set AND your original receipt. For our Performance rating we gave the set a 6 since it does well give give a head start on a good tool set but it is a bummer the warranty is not quite as good as what we are used to from Craftsman. For our Value rating we gave the set an 8 since the tools have a quality feel to them and for the fact that there was such a variety of tools for a fair price.Tom is one of the original founders of Pro Tool Reviews. As noted, Craftsman Evolv tools are often generic import tools and have a fake lifetime warranty. The fine print says you have to keep your receipt. That's probably one of the main reasons they're cheaper. This warranty does not cover expendable parts that can wear out from normal use within the warranty period. I have some of the Companion wrench sets. They came in plastic rolls and work great as a tool set to keep in the trunk of the car. They are decent wrenches for occasional use but not nearly as nice as US made Craftsman wrenches. SMKS said:. That's not bad. At least you don't have to fret about getting a made in China tool in exchange for the tool you bring in.I do a fair bit of volunteer work and share tools on site DanCo Well-known member. I have those very hex sockets both SAE and metric. No complaints, I bought them when the evolve line first came out. SweetD Well-known member. It's really sad. I have some of Sears' vintage Dunlap stuff, like a lot of you guys do. A wicked nice vintage scroll saw, really nice old drill press, etc. At the time of manufacture, Dunlap was to Craftsman as "evolv" is to Craftsman now. What a joke. The Dunlap quality was and still is relatively excellent compared to this evolv sh! Pathetic and sad. Goodbye Craftsman and Sears. Good knowing you. Loscaldazar Well-known member. Since they're just re-branded stuff, it seems some of it is decent quality stuff about on par with the good HF items. The impacts are one example. The Evolv are Taiwan, the Craftsmans are China. But the Evolvs are cr-v, I think, so not the ideal material for impacts. Super Sport Well-known member. SweetD said:. I don't own the hex or torx set but the main "idea" is probably that it's cheap and it's widely available.Compared to the companion stuff the evolv line is probably a step up as far as finish. Don't know about durability though, the companion stuff wasn't too bad I got some of that stuff, got some of the evolv stuff.Unless you're using hex sockets all day these will probably be okay for most guys, torx too. Under maybe 40 ft lbs most of these chinese deals can take it in non-impact. Zapp Branigan Well-known member. Joined Mar 16, Messages Joined Feb 1, Messages I like Evolv. It's honest. It doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't: basic, cheap tools for people who don't really care about tools.Sets like this and this are perfect starter kits for someone who just started living on their own. It's competing against the Stanley stuff at Wal-Mart and the Durabuilt stuff at Target, after all, not any of the tool brands that actually catalogue open stock.Complaining that Evolv tools are cheap is like complaining that Huffy bicycles are cheap. Well, no shit. No one who buys them cares. Zapp Branigan said:. Have you kept a Sears receipt for over a year?
