What does cygwin rebaseall do

I want to build bit executable. Whenever I try cygwin-x86, I get the following errors:. I have already tried everything mentioned in there, but I still continue to face the same issue. Segmentation fault core dumped. I get this wrong machine type error for a lot of other. But while running rebaseall it is somehow looking for xpc-cygwin instead of 32 bit version. Also without installing anything will execute a rebase for you.

Additional note: The most likely cause of fork problems on 32 bit system are too many programs and libraries installed. If you are used to using the -s option with rebaseall, to add additional suffixes to the rebase list such as. If you specify custom suffixes, you must restate the default ones, AND explicitly specify what action to perform; peflagsall disables all default behavior when custom settings are used. See 'Command line syntax', in the next section.

This option is supposed to be used by Cygwin's setup tool. Only use it if you know what you're doing! See the description below. However, if any of [-d -t -s] are specified then ONLY the actions so specified will occur.

Implies -d. If -b is given, too, the database gets recreated. Implies -s. With -s, use the database. The files are ordered by base address.

One of the options -b, -s, -O or -i is mandatory. If no rebase database exists yet, -b is required together with -s. Without this option the files are rebased from BaseAddress bottom-up. With the -s option, this option is implicitly set.

DLLs on Windows need to be loaded into memory at non-conflicting base addresses. A bit more technical explanation from Handling repeated failures of rebaseall to allow cygwin remaps :.

Because of unix fork semantics presumably , cygwin libraries must be mapped in the same location in both parent and child of a fork. All cygwin libraries have hints in them as to where they should be mapped in a processes address space; if those hints are followed, each library will be mapped in the same location in both address spaces. However, Windows is perfectly happy mapping a DLL anywhere in the address space; the hint is not considered controlling.

The remapping error occurs when a cygwin process starts and one of its libraries cannot be mapped to the location specified by its hint. This process makes sure there are no intra-cygwin conflicts, but cannot deal with conflicts with external DLLs that are in cygwin process address spaces e. I don't think this happens yet! So this solution of rebasing every single DLL is clearly not scaleable into the future, unless the Cygwin DLL's memory layout is rearranged, or unless DLLs are rebased into another memory space.

Dave Korn. Post by Satish Balay Doesn't setup have similar problem with updating 'packages' for running apps? I think it prompts for a reboot to complete. So I'm guessing the same approach can be used when it needs a rebase. Post by Satish Balay "some packages that require 'rebaseall' are updated. This operation cannot be done at this time due to active cygwin processes. Please reboot, shutdown cygwin services, and run 'rebaseall' from 'ash'.

Post by Satish Balay - open a dialog box with a message: "some packages that require 'rebaseall' are updated - hence setup is incomplete. Please reboot, shutdown cygwin services and rerun setup - so that it can continue and fix this. Post by Brian Dessent This is why the whole rebasing method is not scaleable and why we should really be aiming to throw away rebase and use --enable-auto-image-base for every package.

We would get flooded with complaints about this extra annoying dialog box, and "why can't setup replace in use files like it used to", and "I don't care about rebasing, all my apps work fine, how can I disable this?
